Smithfield Presbyterian Church

As we researched local building traditions, we found, at the end of the same road, a wonderfully preserved Greek Revival church. The church, founded in 1747, has a small but active congregation after 260 years. This building, built in 1847-8, is the third church erected on the site; at that time the hamlet was a prosperous farming community, large enough to support a second church as well.

The Church is an excellent example of the formal "temple style" Greek Revival, displaying the "Golden Section", strict symmetry in the interior as well as façade. The church is well preserved with most of the original details: the pews are original, as is the main lighting fixture which used to be a whale-oil lamp (see the oil reservoir below the lights and the reflective surfaces meant to cast the light to the room). The interior color scheme shown is most likely not the original, however, the red wall color has been used for decades.
