The house is insulated well in excess of building code requirements. For example, all interior walls are insulated, as well as the first floor ceiling/second floor, as illustrated in the above photo. Although this not commonly done, it is a relatively easy way to increase the heating/cooling efficiency of the house, especially when different rooms or areas of the house are heated or cooled differently.

We have taken care in minimizing envelope leakage and distribution losses, selecting good windows and good HVAC systems: the AC equipment has a high SEER rating of 13 and the propane furnaces have an efficiency of over 92%. We have installed a hot water recirculating loop which minimizes the amount of water and energy needed. Some of the appliances are high-efficiency. Although a renewable energy system has not been installed, solar panels could be added to the south facing roof of the barn.
